Transcribe, AI Translate and Embed Subtitles in the Straker Translate App in Slack

Upload media files directly in Slack to have them transcribed, AI translated and subtitled, ready to download.

Choose between two workflows: Transcription only or Transcription and translation. With either workflow you can embed subtitles into your video and request an extra native transcript copy in .docx format. An SRT subtitle file is always included.

Accepted file formats: mp3, mp4, mpeg, mpga, m4a, wav and webm
Maximum file size: 1 GB
Maximum target languages per request: 10

How quoting works

You choose all your options once, at the start. Quoting then happens in up to two stages, and nothing is charged until you accept a quote.

  • Quote 1 (transcription): covers transcription, plus source subtitle embedding if you selected it for a Transcription only job. Every job receives this quote.
  • Quote 2 (transcription and translation): covers AI translation, plus source subtitle embedding and translated subtitle embedding if you selected them. This quote is only sent for Transcription and translation, and is posted automatically once your transcript is finalised, because the translation cost is based on the finished transcript.

Step 1: Upload your media file

Open the Straker Translate app and go to the Messages tab. Attach your media file to the message pane and send it.

Step 2: Select your services

The app will reply with a prompt. Press Select services.

Step 3: Choose your options in the Service selection window

The Service selection window gathers everything the app needs up front, so you won't be asked again later in the thread.

  • Under File(s) to process, check that the correct file is listed. Click the X next to a file name to remove it.
  • Under Workflow, choose Transcription only or Transcription and translation.
  • If you choose Transcription and translation, click Translate to and select your target language(s). This field is hidden for Transcription only.
  • Under Embedding (optional), tick Source subtitles, Translated subtitles or both to have subtitles embedded into your video. Translated subtitles is only available with Transcription and translation. (Note: The Embedding section is not shown for audio-only files like mp3, mpga, m4a, or wav.)
  • Under Native transcript copy (.docx format) (optional), choose an extra transcript copy in Word format, if needed:
    • Text: the transcript as plain text.
    • Speakers: the transcript with each speaker labelled.
    • Timestamps: the transcript with timestamps for each section.
    • Speakers and timestamps: the transcript with both.
Leave it as None if you only need the SRT file.
  • Click Submit.

Then follow the steps for the workflow you chose.

Step 4: Accept your quote

A Service Quote will appear in the thread showing the file, the cost of each service and the total cost. If you selected Source subtitles, the embedding cost is included on this quote. Click Accept Quote to begin processing, or Cancel to stop.

The app confirms that processing has started while it transcribes your file.

Step 5: Review your transcript

When transcription is complete, your SRT file will be posted in the thread, ready to download. If Source subtitles was selected, you can either:

  • Press Proceed to continue with the transcript as it is, or
  • Download the SRT file, make your corrections, press Edit and reupload and upload the edited SRT file into the same thread. Keep the original file name so the app can match it to your job.

If Source subtitles were not selected, the SRT file (and Word copy, if chosen) is delivered and the job ends without requiring a Proceed step.

Step 6: Download your files

Your files are delivered to the thread and the job is complete. If you select Source subtitles, your video with embedded subtitles will be posted in the thread. Download the media file to view the subtitles.

Correcting the transcript at this stage means your changes carry through to the translation and translated subtitles.

Step 6: Accept the translation quote

Once your transcript is finalised, a second Service Quote is posted automatically. It shows the AI translation cost for each target language, plus the cost of Source subtitles and Translated subtitles embedding if selected. Notes

Duplicate submissions: If a request for the same video is still in progress, the app will block a duplicate submission until it finishes or fails, displaying the message: "A request for this video is still in progress. You can request more services once it has finished." Once completed or failed, you can submit the request again immediately.

Viewing embedded subtitles: For VLC and QuickTime players, the subtitles will be embedded directly into the videos. For other media players, download the SRT files from the thread to view the subtitles.
